Introduction
Not every employee in your company needs access to every Venture Desktop function. Venture Desktop is built on a role or task oriented permission system.
Access Controls
Venture system administration tools include permission controls on a user level that allow users to be assigned to roles or job tasks. Roles may include "Customer Service" or "Purchasing" for example. Those roles are granted access to various parts of the system and excluded entirely from others.
When cross-over roles come into play, per user access control allows for more unusual permission to role pairing. For example, a modified standard role may be one for a customer service representative who also does work with accounts receivable.
Access control is a task typically associated with your system administrator. Additional information about access control is part of the system administrator's guide in the Venture Service Manual.
Check Pointing
Venture's relational database tracks all changes to all data in the system. This serves as a data check pointing system. In addition to making sure that the user making the change has sufficient access rights to commit the change, Venture logs the change and makes it available for review and possible roll-back.
This means that if a change is made that should not have been done, the user name associated with the change is logged and the system administrator can revert the change back to the previous value quickly.
For example, let's say that a Venture user changes a cost for an item. The cost change was wrong but the user cannot remember what the previous value. With the check point system, the system administrator queries the database and displays all value changes associated with the record or user within a time range. From there, the values may be rolled-back to their previous state.
In addition, Venture Desktop provides "last edited" references to employee logins:
In this item maintenance look-up example, note the Added and Modified fields. This indicates that user kbrownlee added the item to the database on 2006-07-31 and the same user also made modifications to this record on 2006-11-28.
If more information was needed about the specific nature of the modifications, the system administrator can either provide the data directly to the inquirer or provide an interactive report in the Reporting and Analysis module.
Data check pointing persists for the life of the database. All changes are logged and kept on permanent record for review or alteration.
